Quick Start Guide
- Create or open a .json world file using the welcome screen.
- Click Add World to create your first story world.
- Select the tabs and genres that fit your story. Talenscript provides dedicated tabs to capture every aspect of your world — and if something's missing, you can always create a custom tab.
- Configure an Assistant API (e.g. Gemini, Claude, Groq, OpenAI) to chat with an AI about your world. Having trouble finding the API model? Paste the provider name into an AI assistant and ask for its current model list.
- All data is saved automatically to your local file — no manual saving required.
FEATURES GUIDE (IMPORTANT)
- Background Settings — Click the gear icon in the top-right corner to adjust background settings and reduce GPU load if the app feels slow. The icon is draggable, click and drag to reposition it anywhere on screen.
- Export Options — Export individual worlds as JSON or plain TEXT files directly from the Edit World modal. To import a world, use the Import World button on the left panel and select a previously exported world file. (⚠️ Important:The Import World button only accepts files exported from the Edit World modal. Do not use it with files opened via the Open File button, and do not use the Open File button to import world exports — file formats are organized differently and will not work if mixed).
- Card Linking — Link any card anywhere in your world by typing "card-name" in the same format in any text field. Any date written in D/M/Y format automatically links to your calendar.
- Media Support — Every card supports media attachments to visually represent - characters, items, locations, and more.
- Tags & Badges —Click on any tag or badge (after creating it) to open its settings panel and customize it further.
- Map Annotations — In the map tab: left-click and drag to navigate the image, click to place a label, click again to remove it, and scroll to zoom in and out.
- Storyline Chapters — After building your storyline, click any chapter box (e.g. chapters 1-5) to write the events that occur within those chapters.
- Custom Dropdown Fields — Every dropdown in every card includes a custom field option — because we believe writers deserve every possible choice.
- Note Priority — Set priority levels on your quick notes based on their importance, so the most critical ideas are never buried.
- Web Network System — Build hierarchies, family trees, faction webs, or planning boards using the relationship web system. Click any node to write its description.
- Custom Exchange Rates — Define and manage custom currency exchange rates for your world's economy.
- Custom Calendar — Fully configure your world's calendar — set hours per day, days per month, weeks per month, months per year, seasons, and eras. Write notes on any specific date.
- Search & Filter — Every tab has a dedicated search bar to quickly filter and find any card.
- Custom Tabs — We know we can't capture every idea — so you can. Add a custom tab for anything your world needs that isn't covered by our existing tabs. We trust your imagination to go further than ours.
- Background ON/OFF — The Background Controls panel has an ON/OFF switch. Turning it OFF stops the animation completely (zero GPU cost, no blur) and the setting is remembered; Reset turns it back ON.
- Folders & Subfolders — Create folders inside most tabs, nest folders inside folders, and open them to see only that level's cards. Folder cards always appear before normal cards (including in search results), and Storyline folders use the same card grid as everything else.
- Edit Inputs (Custom Card Structure) — Open Add/Edit on any card and press Edit Inputs to add custom sections or inputs, remove built-in ones, or reorder them, then press Save Inputs. Each folder can keep its own structure, and new cards created inside that folder inherit it.
- Structured Modules (Power Systems) — Power Systems can hold entity-local collections such as Branches, Progression stages, Abilities, Resources, Relationships, or a custom collection. Add entries, choose field types, link entries to each other, and display each module as cards, a numbered timeline, or compact rows. Modules are saved with that one power system and never affect Edit Inputs templates.
- Show Network — Almost every card detail view (all tabs except Web Networks itself) has a Show Network button. It builds a live graph of every card linked to it through card-name mentions; click a node to expand its links, drag to arrange, scroll to zoom, and optionally save the graph as a new Web Network. It works offline with a built-in graph renderer.
- Collapsible Sections — In Add/Edit modals, click any section heading to collapse or expand it. Several sections can stay open at once, and collapsing only changes the view — your saved data and card layouts are never affected.
- Square Card Images — Every card thumbnail (entity and folder) is a perfect 1:1 square and crops to fill without stretching. Detail images, upload previews, badges, and graph nodes keep their original sizes.
- Map Label Dragging — After placing an annotation on a map, drag the label itself to reposition it precisely without deleting and recreating it.
- Automatic Backup — Alongside the file save, a mirror copy of your worlds is kept in the browser's IndexedDB. If the normal saved data is ever missing or cleared, Tale'N'Script restores that backup automatically on startup.
Privacy Notes
- Your world data stays on your device — in your world file, the browser's storage, and a local backup mirror. Tale'N'Script sends nothing anywhere on its own: no analytics, no tracking, no accounts.
- AI Assistant — When you chat with the Assistant, Tale'N'Script sends your message plus a short text summary of your world (names and descriptions only) to whichever AI provider you configured, using your own API key. Those providers are fully external to this app and have their own privacy policies.
- Suggestion form — The Suggestions tab embeds a Google Form. Anything you type there (including your email) goes to Google and to the developer.
- API keys live in plain text inside your world file — so treat your world file like a password. Don't share it, post it, or upload it anywhere public. If you ever shared it with someone, revoke/rotate that key at your AI provider.
- Shared computers — Everything (including your world and chat history) is readable by other users of the same browser profile, and Clear All Storage in the sidebar removes it all.
